Commission Report on Fisheries Technical Measures Highlights Sustainability Benefits

Today, the European Commission published a comprehensive report detailing the implementation of technical measures aimed at safeguarding fisheries resources and marine ecosystems.

These measures are essential for the sustainable management of fisheries, minimising the adverse impacts of fishing activities on marine biodiversity and ecosystems.

The report underscores several critical provisions to enhance sustainability:

  1. Innovative Fishing Gears and Practices: Adoption of advanced fishing technologies to reduce bycatch and habitat disruption.

     

  2. Minimum Conservation Sizes: Setting size limits for fish species to protect juvenile fish and allow stock recovery.

     

  3. Fishing Activity Restrictions: Limiting or prohibiting fishing in certain areas or periods to protect vulnerable species and habitats.

Since 2021, the Commission has approved 14 delegated acts based on joint recommendations from Member States, supported by scientific advice. Notable measures include:

  • Protection of Harbour Porpoise in the Baltic Sea: Implementation of gear restrictions and seasonal closures to safeguard this endangered species.
  • Seasonal Closures for Atlantic Halibut: Protecting spawning areas in the Skagerrak and Kattegat regions.

The report integrates advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) on innovative fishing gears, emphasizing the importance of innovation for a resilient and competitive EU fisheries sector. This ensures European consumers receive high-quality seafood while minimizing environmental impact.

While the report highlights significant progress, it also identifies areas needing improvement, such as accelerating the adoption of measures to mitigate impacts on sensitive species. The involvement of various stakeholders, particularly the Advisory Councils, is crucial for the effective implementation of these technical measures.
