The European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries (EP) approved the four-year renewal of the fisheries agreement with the Republic of Mauritius, which allows Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese vessels to fish in the waters of this island in the Indian Ocean until 2021.
The agreement, which runs from April 26, 2017, was approved by the members of the Fisheries Committee with 19 votes in favor and 3 against, but in April it must be validated in the plenary session of the European Parliament.
This fisheries protocol allows 85 vessels, of which 34 are Spanish (22 purse seiners and 12 longliners), to operate in the waters of Mauritius for four years. In return, the European Union will pay Mauritius a total of EUR 2.3 million during the period between 2017 and 2021.
Of this total, EUR 220,000 will be earmarked annually for the fishing of 4,000 tonnes of product, EUR 220.00 for the development of the national fisheries policy of Mauritius and EUR 135,000 for the development of the maritime policy and the ocean economy of the country.
