Moving on from his firm’s issues with the landing obligation (below), Dan Whittle, managing director of processor Whitby Seafoods, said that sector disparities meant the International Labour Organization’s work in fishing convention otherwise known as ILO c188 was still a challenge to fully comply with in the UK shrimp sector.
The regulation, internationally adopted on Nov. 16, 2017, was finally ratified by the UK government in January this year.
It’s another one where the date was set and then it was moved back, and you kind of got the impression that there was no clear idea how best to implement the idea, Whittle said.
Whitby’s managing director added that the three toughest issues were providing legal contracts for work in quite an informal industry, introducing health and safety management systems, and then hours and pay.
