In a major relief, 170 out of the 400 fishermen from different parts of the district of Madurai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, who had been for deep sea fishing in Goa a month ago, returned to the shore safely in Maharashtra on Saturday.

According to reports reaching here, the Coast Guard officials and others were taking all out efforts to save the remaining 230 fishermen in 17 boats, who were said to be stranded in mid-sea after gutsy winds rocked their boats.

Officials here said that fishermen from various villages had set on fishing a month ago to Goa and other parts from Thengaipattinam port. They would stay for a month or even more and return home with big catch. Like the fishermen from Tamil Nadu, many others from neighbouring Kerala and Karnataka too had set for Goa and Maharashtra last month for fishing.
