Directors of the National Confederation of Artisanal Fishermen of Chile (CONAPACH) are requesting to reject the short fisheries law and to promote the 34 measures proposed by the base organizations of the Confederation, one of which is the new quota fractioning in favour of artisanal fishing.
The request arises after the implementation of the announcements made by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA).
CONAPACH leaders reject the regulation because they argue that its main purpose is to solve the issue of tradeable licenses in the industry, instead of prioritizing the artisanal sector. In addition, they consider that it is a project that has been formulated behind closed doors, without consulting the actors, and that lacks a redistribution of quotas that favour them.
On the other hand, they urge CONAPACH grassroots organizations to join the participatory meetings of the so-called long law, to raise the needs of the artisanal fishing sector expressed in the XXIII CONAPACH National Congress – December 2017.
The leaders of artisanal fishing also propose that from then on they will be focused on getting joint work with deputies and senators from their respective regions, so that they know the needs of the sector and thus seek support in the modifications that are proposed.
