The Island should have separate cabinet ministers for fisheries and agriculture, says the P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association’s president.
Craig Avery made the remarks when he appeared before the fisheries committee recently and said it’s too big a portfolio to combine with agriculture, which is the current minister’s other responsibility.
Avery said there is also a potential for a conflict on issues such as high-capacity wells, nitrates and fish kills.
We have to find a medium somewhere but we feel that particular issue right there is enough that we definitely need our own minister, he said.
He told the MLAs PEIFA members voted in favour of asking for the return of a dedicated minister of fisheries and aquaculture.
Avery said he brings the issue up with Premier Wade MacLauchlan every time he sees him.
I think he’s starting to duck me and I don’t like that, so I think it’s time let’s get that done.
