A three-day international conference on sustainable fisheries organised by the fisheries faculty of Sylhet Agricultural University began on Sunday. Agriculture minister Mohammad Abdur Razzaque inaugurated the programme styled 1st International Conference on Sustainable Fisheries’ at a party centre in Sylhet city as chief guest. Fisheries and livestock affairs state minister Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council executive chairman Md Kabir Ikramul Haque, Department of Fisheries director general Abu Sayeed Md Rashedul Haque, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute director general Yahia Mahmud, Food and Agriculture Organisation country representative Robert Douglas Simpson and World Fish country director Chris Price, among others, addressed the inaugural ceremony of the three-day conference. The SAU vice-chancellor professor Matiar Rahman Hawlader chaired the programme that was also addressed by SAU fisheries faculty dean Tariqul Alam and the conference organising committee member secretary Mrittunjoy Kunda. Professor David C Little, from the Institute of Aquaculture of University of Stirling in Scotland, presented the main keynote paper of the three-day conference participated by the representatives of 13 countries. The chief guest said in the inaugural speech that Bangladesh is going to attain self-reliance in agriculture and fisheries sectors for the successful leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Arrangement of the international conference would be helpful in making the fisheries sector of the country sustainable, the minister added.
