Magura district is facing deficiency of 2083.45 tonnes of fish. According to Magura District Fishery Office, the total demand of fish in the district is 18,131 tonnes while the production is 16,047 .55 tonnes. So the district is now facing fish deficiency of 2083.45 tonnes. Historian says once Magura was noted for abundant production of fish. Moreover the district was named Magura as huge amount of Magur fish were produced in the district. But now it has turned into a story only. In this situation fishermen in the district are passing hard time. The district occupies huge amount of water bodies. The district have 15149 ponds under private ownership, 52 ponds under government ownership, 8 rivers, 105 beals, 156 canals, 5 Baors and 6 safe shelters. The main impediment of fish production is limitation in producing fish fries. There is only one government hatchery in the district. The demand of fish fry is 213.5 million while production is 151.2 million in the district. The only government hatchery is not capable to produce fish fries according to the demand. In this situation the district is fulfilling its demand importing fish from outside of the district. Consequently the price of fish is abnormally high in the district. People of low income of the district are taking their meal without fish. On the other hand about 20 thousand people in the district are dependent on fish directly or indirectly for their livelihood. They are facing hard time. A fisherman Kabir Hossein of village Nanduali under Magura sadar upazila said, “The number of fishermen is decreasing in the village. I am also thinking to change my profession as fish is hardly available in the rivers of the district.” When contacted Magura District Fishery Officer Narayan Chandra Dash admitted the deficiency of fish in the district. He added we are now trying to enhance the capability of our hatchery to increase fish fry production, “We are optimistic that the fish deficiency will be removed in the district within 3 years.”
