When the country was marching towards self-sufficiency in fish production in the country an unemployed but educated young man has shown the way and means for fish production without any pond or water bodies. Rather, he has chosen the sands on the river banks as his planned water body. The officers of the department of fisheries admired the initiative taken by the youth Raqibul Islam Sagar, which they believe might help him come out of poverty as well as strengthen national economy. Raqibul Islam Sagar of Charbakharba village under Sarutia union of Shailkupa upazila when contacted said after obtaining degree from a college he started farming of most popular variety of fish Koi in a leased pond a few years back. But he incurred heavy loss for lacking required skill and other reasons. Since then he was confident to overcome the situation and started fish farming on the sands of local river Gorai. For the last few years he has been conducting experiments and finally saw the success. Sagar said he set polythene on the sands near the river bank and filled it with water. Then he made separate water holes of one metre depth. The fish fries of short duration tilapia, thaiputi, shrimps and some other variety are cultivated there in commercial basis. The fish might be one kilogram in weight within three to three and a half month, he said. About his experience, Sagar said, he released fish fries worth taka five thousand and received taka ten thousand as an experiment from a single bed last year. The number of beds increased to four of 105 feet in length and 17- to 18 feet in width. Polythene was set in the bottom of the beds. According to Sagar, three young men at the surrounding areas have also started farming in the same manner witnessing his success.
