Fisheries experts at a function here said the present government has taken massive programmemes for enhancing fish production to meet protein demand and achieve self-reliance on fish within its current tenure. Assistant Project Director of the ‘Fisheries Development Project for Rangpur Division’ Md Kholiquzzaman attended the function as the chief guest with Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Masud Rana Sarker in the chair. Assistant Upazila Fisheries Officer Harun-Ar-Rashid and Chairman of local Mithipur union parishad SM Faruk Ahmed addressed the function as the special guests. A large number of small and marginal farmers, fishermen, men, women, youths, members of the local union parishad, socio-cultural activists, government and NGO officials and elite were present on the occasion. The experts said that the country produced 3.68 million tonnes of fish during 2014-15 against annual demand of 4.2 million tonnes as its production increases by 0.1 million tonnes every year to achieve self-reliance soon within tenure of the present government. The chief guest said the government has been implementing the project for extension of fish farming in rural areas, stressed the need for setting up fish feed mills and assured of providing assistance towards to the private sector entrepreneurs for boosting fish production.
