At least three memorandums of understanding on cooperation in the areas of fishing, cultural exchange and holding foreign office consultations are expected to be signed during Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s visit to Bangladesh, diplomatic sources said. Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled for today to arrive in Dhaka today on the two-day state visit. Solih, also head of the Maldivian government, will join bilateral talks with Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her office on Thursday. Issues relating to the interests and welfare of Bangladeshi migrant workers in the island country would be a major focus of the talks, said a foreign ministry official. Bangladesh is the second country for the Maldivian president to visit, after concluding a trip to Qatar on Tuesday, since the archipelago reopened borders in July 2020 after nearly four months since borders were closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
He would join the celebrations of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. President Abdul Hamid will receive his Maldivian counterpart who is set to reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by an Emirates flight in the morning. Ibrahim Solih will visit the National Memorial at Savar to pay respect to the martyrs of the War of Independence in 1971. He will also join and address a rally and a cultural programme at the National Parade Ground organised as a part of the celebration. Solih is set to leave Dhaka for home on early Friday.
