The continuous queries arising in Fiji regarding the ban on the harvest of sea turtles is indicative that many of the community members are still unaware of the existing regulations pertaining to turtle harvesting, says Ministry of Fisheries regional manager eastern, Mere Namudu.
She made the comment following a trip to the Lau islands where villagers had voiced their opinions about the ban of sea turtles.
She said there was still room for more clarification and awareness by the Government and its partners that needed to be done on the ban, as many Fijians did not understand the procedures in place. She said the ministry continued to protect sea turtles under the Offshore Fisheries Management Regulation 2014 on Restrictions relating to endangered or protected fish species.
She added a public notice released on January 26, 2019 bans the harvest, sale, possession and transport of sea turtles, their eggs or any part or product. “Under the regulation, individuals caught breaking the ban can face an instant fine of $10,000 with the potential of up to $50,000. For corporations, an instant fine of $20,000 with the potential of up to $100,000.”
