Twenty-three cuboid artificial reefs worth RM278,600 will be anchored in the waters of Kuantan (a municipality and the state capital of Pahang, Malaysia) to increase the fish population in order to boost fishermen’s income.
Pahang Rural Development, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif said the artificial reefs will be placed off the coast of Kampung Chempaka, Pantai Sepat and Cherok Palok at a distance of five nautical miles.
In 2010, we had anchored 18 units of tetrapod artificial reefs in zig-zag shape to prevent foreign fishing boat encroachment and to create marine habitats.
As a result, the fish population increased in the area. Therefore we will anchor the cuboid recreational reefs as they are suitable for fishing and diving activities, he said at the launch of the cuboid artificial reefs in the Fisheries Jetty, Pahang Fisheries Department Complex.
