Exports from the Argentinian fishing sector grew 16.5 percent in 2017, compared to the previous year, generating almost USD 2 billion in revenues, according to preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).
According to the last Argentine Trade Exchange report released by the INDEC, the figures for 2017 indicate that the fishing sector exported products for a total of USD 1.959 million, compared to USD 1.682 million in 2016.
Exports of raw fish and shellfish reached USD 1,707 million, compared to USD 1,422 million in 2016, which means a growth of 20 percent.
Meanwhile, exports of processed seafood reached a value of USD 252 million, 3.1 percent less than in the previous year, when they reached USD 260 million.
The excellent shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) catches recorded last year had a strong positive impact on the export figures of the fishing sector. In 2017, more than 200,000 tonnes of shrimp were exported for around USD 1.3 billion, an amount that represents 65 percent of the total value.
Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) exports also experienced a rebound, both in volume and value: some 80,000 tonnes were exported for USD 190 million.
Sales of hake (Merluccius hubbsi), meanwhile, remained stable in 2017, with exports close to 103,000 tonnes for USD 245 million.
