Fifteen thousand fishermen, including five thousand women from the Angolan provinces of Luanda, Cuanza Norte, Bengo and Malanje, will join the support project for inland fisheries and communal aquaculture launched Monday in Luanda by Fisheries minister, Victoria de Barros Neto.
The general director of the Institute for Development of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IPA), Nkosi Leyeye, announced this Monday.
He stressed that the five-year project aims to join the initiatives to combat hunger and poverty.
Nkosi Leyeye said the actions will ensure the strengthening of institutional capacity at national, provincial, and municipal level with extending services, increased quantity and quality of fish production.
He also spoke of improvement of community participation in the economy and improvement of infrastructure and marketing system.
According to IPA director, the reasons for the choice of the above provinces were analysed and discussed between the Ministry of Fisheries, represented by the IPA, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
The objective is to finance the development project, mainly for food production with a view to meeting the basic needs of the population.
The project is estimated at USD 12.1 million, with IFAD having spent USD 11.1 million and the remaining USD 1million from Angolan government.
The support project for inland fisheries and aquaculture was approved in April 2015 but the funding agreement was signed in August of the same year.
