Fishermen were trained on responsible fishing techniques and interventions for sustainable exploitation of resources, in compliance with the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries’ at a three-day skill development programme that concluded here on Wednesday. The programme, organised by the ICAR CIFT, Visakhapatnam, included fabrication of square mesh cod-ends, CIFT-TED and foldable traps. About 25 fishermen involved in trawl fishing and net making took part in the programme, sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad. Hands-on training Hands-on training was given to fishermen to fabricate and make square mesh cod-ends and attach it to the trawls nets, which would help reduce small fish in the catch. They were also taught to fabricate and assemble square mesh panels, a catch reduction device. A manual in Telugu language was also released. Scientist in-charge R. Raghu Prakash, Principal Scientist U. Sreedhar and scientist G. Kamei were also present.
