The second in the series of IYAFA Workshops 2022 — the Latin America and the Caribbean workshop: Celebrating Sustainable and Equitable Small-Scale Fisheries, co-organized by ICSF and CONFREM — commenced on 2 November 2022.
IYAFA workshops are conducted in connection with the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), in an effort to strengthen the recognition of the crucial contributions of small-scale fisheries (SSF) to global food security and nutrition, and to highlight the importance of tenure rights and social development in the sector.
IYAFA Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is a four-day workshop being conducted in Cardoso Island, Cananéia, State of São Paulo, Brazil from 2-5 November. With a wide participation from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries, the workshop includes more than 50 participants across various fishworker organizations, community-based organizations and civil society organizations.
The workshop will discuss various matters relating to SSF in the LAC context, including Social Development, Tenure Rights, Gender, International Advocacy and the Blue Economy. One day of the workshop is fully devoted to discussions on women in SSF.
The workshop intends to highlight the major challenges faced by SSF in the LAC region and devise collaborative solutions through participant-centered interactive methodologies. The workshop provides an opportunity to further reiterate the objectives and promote the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) in the Latin American and the Caribbean region.
