Operations of the ice production plant maintained at Galle Fisheries Harbor under the Ceylon Fishery Harbors Corporation have been temporarily stopped due to an ammonia gas leak in the plant. Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda recently held a discussion with a group of officials of the Ceylon Fishery Harbors Corporation to inquire into the resumption of the operations of the ice production plant.
The officials explained that due to a malfunction of the machines in the ice storage complex, a certain amount of ammonia is being released and the ice production has been disrupted. Measures are being taken to restore it, the officials added. The Minister pointed out that the production of ice, which is necessary for the preservation of fish stocks, should not be disrupted, as there is a possibility of spreading misconceptions among the fishery community and advised the officials to take necessary steps to finish the repairs of the ice production plant as soon as possible. Fisheries Ministry Secretary Mrs. Indu Ratnayake and a group of officials from Ceylon Fisheries Corporation attended the meeting.
