Six fishing boats were involved in a major fire near Ponte 16 in the Inner Harbour of Macau, a special administrative region (SAR) of greater China, in the late hours of Monday but no deaths or injuries resulted from the fire, marine authorities indicated.
According to the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA), on the evening of April 25 at about 7:00 pm a fishing boat caught fire amid a row of about a dozen fishing boats anchored in the Inner Harbour pier off the Ponte 16 Hotel, with the fire quickly spreading to adjacent fishing boats.
The Fisheries Association and the Federation of Trade Unions have stated that they will continue to follow up on the handling of the situation and the aftermath, and try their best to provide assistance to the affected fishermen, the Chinese language newspaper Macao Daily reported.
With no fishing season open at the moment, any fishing boats are docked in the Inner Harbour during this time of year.
The associations noted that damage to the fishing boats will directly affect the income of the fishermen, and the large cost of repairing the fishing boats will also be a heavy burden for the affected fishermen and hoped that the government will take the initiative to care and give appropriate assistance, such as providing maintenance subsidies to help the fishermen who are affected by the disaster.
