Authorities in Cambodia arrested eight Vietnamese nationals who were caught fishing with banned fishing equipment. The eight fishermen were arrested on the morning of March 9 while fishing at the Tonle Sap in Kampong Leu Village, Kbal Commune. Krakor District, Pursat, which is an area that borders Kampong Thom.
The group was arrested by a joint force that was established to crackdown on illegal fishing. According to the joint force, the men arrested are Vietnamese nationals. The authorities stated that the Vietnamese nationals ranged from 13 to 40 years of age and are residents of Pursat.
The authorities also seized illegal fishing equipment from the fishermen which are being held at the Krakor Fisheries Administration Office. The eight have been sent by the Fisheries Administration of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Pursat to court.
The various fisheries departments in the country have stepped up measures to crackdown on illegal fishing practices that may negatively impact the population of fishes in the river.
