The first new beam trawler built in a generation at Brixham, in the county of Devon, in the south-west of England, is heading out to sea this weekend with a new recruit – MP Anthony Mangnall will be finding out what life is like for fishermen.

The 35.2m Georgina of Ladram has been hailed as a “a symbol of confidence” for Brixham and was the first new-build beam trawler in around 30 years.

Mr Mangnall said the fishing and aquaculture sectors had faced significant challenges in recent months, but the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was listening and offering support.

News is expected soon about the £100 million fisheries fund which it is hoped will be beneficial to the fishing communities in Brixham, Salcombe and Dartmouth.
