The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), an important recognition of the millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers for their contributions to human well-being, food security, nutrition and poverty eradication.
Besides their paramount importance to food provision, income generation and social welfare, small-scale fisheries and aquaculture are often related to ecosystems with high biodiversity, making these activities also relevant for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and development of natural resources.
On the occasion of the IYAFA 2022, Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries (Guest Editors: John Kurien and Renato Silvano) will publish a Special Issue of high-quality reviews and research articles focused on the multi-dimensional aspects of livelihoods and occupational pursuits within these artisanal, indigenous and small-scale fisheries and aquaculture systems across the world. These include the multiple interactions between these food production systems, the dynamics of exploited fishing resources and supporting ecosystems and ecosystem services.
