In the Amazon region, the original inhabitants have lived from fishing for ages. But prospectors pollute the rivers and poison the fish. The government has banned the indigenous communities in Suriname from eating fish, but there is no alternative. Our own fish farm must now change that.

Six months ago, the Mulokot Foundation started setting up its own fish farm. Mulokot is an indigenous organization from Kawemhakan that is committed to sustainable development of the Wayana, an indigenous population group that also includes the residents of Kawemhakan.

A few young people from the more southern Apetina already showed their interest. They want to have their own fishing pond in their village in the future. In this way, the Wayana community not only has healthy fish and more employment, but it also provides a bit of financial independence.
