Boris Johnson has suggested the UK will ban large fishing trawlers which are doing enormous damage to the marine environment and to fish stocks. The Prime Minister set out beneficial changes to rules for the UK’s fishing waters.
Mr Johnson told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “One of the things we’ve done is get rid of pulse trawling.
“We’ve done it from day one.
“We will be able to ban these huge hoover trawlers that hoover up everything from the bottom of the sea.”
He added that “substantial sums of money” are coming back to the UK due to Brexit.
Mr Johnson said: “For instance, they’ve already got substantial sums of money coming back into this country as a result of leaving the EU.
“We’ve got control over our borders, a points-based immigration system has already been established.
“And then when it comes to areas in parts of the country that feel that they’ve been left behind, one of the things that you can do for instance, to say nothing more (of) the regulatory changes you can make, one of the things you can do is have free ports.”
He added: “You can use tax systems and subsidies in order to drive investment.”
It comes as leaving the European Union’s trading arrangements offers the chance to “transform our country”, Mr Johnson has claimed as UK businesses acclimatised to new Brexit border requirements.
There was little sign of disruption at the border as freight travelled to France and Ireland on a quiet bank holiday after the new arrangements came in at 11pm on New Year’s Eve.
But, according to Logistics UK, close to half the lorries entering Belfast on the first ferry of the day from Great Britain on Friday were called in for inspection as part of new Brexit rules, with one truck stopped in the port for at least three hours as “teething problems” arose.
The Prime Minister said that leaving the single market and customs union meant the UK has “taken back control of our money, our laws and our waters”.
