The fishing sector in Peru grew 28 per cent last September, which represents an important contribution to the expansion rate of the Peruvian economy, said head of the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) Bruno Giuffra.
The minister stressed that this increase was achieved as part of good strategies performed to boost this activity.
“We are alert to opportunities. There was a couple of mackerel sacks and we quickly opened that resource capture. That helped us to raise the growth rate,” he said.
In addition, he assured that in these first 100 days in office, he has heard artisanal fishermen to meet their needs and promote direct human consumption (DHC).
“All fishermen want to be heard, so I have visited 26 coves and have arrived exactly where the waves break. I know exactly what is happening and what they need,” he said.
He argued that his management focuses on empowering artisanal fishermen, offering them technological tools so that better working conditions are created. Among those tools he mentioned the “Datero Pesquero” (Fishing Logbook).
He also said the Mandatory Insurance for Fishworkers (SOPA), which is similar to a nautical SOAT, will be launched.
Finally, Giuffra highlighted the work of Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) for his contribution to the study and knowledge of their marine resources, and stressed that it has recovered its scientific role, separating it from its administrative activity.
