Maine-based North Atlantic presented a fisheries management model at a sustainable fisheries conference in Indonesia, convened by The Economist newspaper, the company said in a release.
The conference brought together a group of investors, government representatives, non-profit organizations and multi-lateral agencies to discuss how to drive investment to address the decline of wild fish stocks.
Jerry Knecht, president of the company, spoke as a panelist at the Pacific Regional Fisheries Summit and reviewed the progress of his team’s community based fishery management model.
The company broke ground on its first fisheries management center in March after fundraising throughout 2015, the first of four planned centers in Indonesia.
The project aims to “capture lost value in the Indonesia artisanal fishery supply chain by setting up local processing, reducing supply chain waste and establishing catch data collection standards”, the release said.
North Atlantic is an importer of wild-caught seafood primarily from Indonesia, serving both traditional and emerging food retail channels.
