Fisheries scientists from the Pacific Community are in Fiji to work with the Fisheries and Forestry Ministry on developing a National Fisheries Policy.
They would also assist in investigating the cause of the recent fish kill along the Coral Coast.
A statement from SPC said fish kills such as those observed in Fiji and Vanuatu were not a new phenomenon.
“Fish kills can occur as a result of a number of factors, ranging from a release of toxic chemicals to low concentrations of dissolved oxygen in water,” it said.
“For now, the Pacific Community is reinforcing government warnings and urging people in affected areas to refrain from consuming the dead fish which may be harmful to human health.”
