Fishermen living in coastal hamlets from Neerodi to Kanyakumari celebrated Chiristmas at mid-sea on Friday.
The celebrations, organised by the South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF), took place nearly 10 nautical miles from Muttom shore.
Fishermen and their family members, who ventured into the sea in over 300 fibre vallams , 100 mechanised boats and 100 catamarans, celebrated Christmas and exchanged pleasantries, cakes and sweets on Friday.
Fr. Churchil, secretary, SAFF, said that the organisation has been organising such social gatherings to enhance camaraderie and goodwill among the fishermen.
Sea is the source of livelihood for the fishermen. Hence, it is appropriate to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ mid-sea, Fr. Churchil said.
