Fifty-six fishermen from the Dominican Republic were Monday fined approximately $11M for fishing in Jamaican waters illegally.
The men were fined in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court that sat at the Marine police headquarters at Newport East, in Kingston, for the specific case.
The captain of the fishing vessel was hit with a million-dollar fine and his two assistants were each fined $500,000.
The men were held recently in the Pedro Cay, along with several Jamaican fishermen. The Dominicans were held with 7000lbs of fish. The fish was seized along with fishing gears belonging to the men.
The men, who were represented by Queen’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson, are to be sent back home.
