Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment has reached an agreement for the exchange of fishing opportunities with France, which benefits the Spanish fishing sector with an increase of 1,000 tonnes of hake and another 1,200 tonnes of monkfish for 2017.
This agreement is part of the exchanges that Spain carries out annually with other Member States, being this the most important one due to the volume of exchanged quotas.
Achieved after several meetings and high-level communications between the two administrations, the deal will allow the Spanish fleet to increase its activity in non-Spanish EU waters by obtaining higher quotas of the two main species captured by its vessels: hake and monkfish
It also includes “miniquotas” of species such as haddock and saithe, of which Spain has no quotas, and which will allow its fleet to catch these species, which to date had been forced to discard.
