Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment (MAPAMA) has called for aid amounting to EUR 10 million for the owners of vessels and fishermen affected by the definitive stoppage of the fishing activity.
The purpose of this aid, which will be co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, is to smooth the adjustment of the fishing capacity of the fleet to its real possibilities in order to achieve a stable and long-lasting balance.
This call is in line with Regulation 508/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which provides for the possibility of granting aid for permanent stoppage, provided that they are provided as an instrument of the Action Plan for fleets in imbalance between the fishing capacity and fishing opportunities.
Thus, the call is addressed to the owners and fishermen of vessels subjected to the final stoppage by means of scrapping, for the modalities and fishing grounds that are included in the fleet segments in imbalance of the Action Plan. It, therefore, affects:
Small scale gear and tuna fishing vessels of the Canary Islands;
Small scale gear, gillnet, driftnet, purse seine, bottom longline and bottom trawling of the Cantabrian and northwest fishing grounds;
Purse seine, bottom trawling and smaller gear from the Gulf of Cadiz;
Minor gear, bottom longline, bottom trawling and Mediterranean fishing ground purse seine;
Unified surface longline census;
Bottom long line in international waters.
