Bidders will have the deadline until next December 21 to submit their proposals for the project in Chile, “Contracting the Design Service of a Coastal Fishing and Oceanographic Research Ship”.
This initiative, presented by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) seeks to improve the existing research fleet, strengthening technical capabilities and the extension of research coverage in coastal sectors and inland waters of the southern region of the country.
Chile currently has two vessels prepared to carry out the necessary studies for the administration of fishery resources, the AGS 61 Cabo de Hornos, administered by the Chilean Navy and the B/C Abate Molina, operated by the IFOP.
Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture Pablo Berazaluce explained that although these two vessels “provide a great service in oceanographic research, they are insufficient to cover the requirements since, due to their size, they can not reach coastal sectors or inland waters in the southern zones “.
“That is why we have begun a process of strengthening the capacities for research, since we need to have a vessel that adequately complements the coastal coverage that the fishing issue requires, being the first stage having the design, for construction later”, the authority continued.
The vessel must be between 22 and 30 metres long and must be able to conduct acoustic surveys of fishery resources, evaluation of the pelagic resource (sardines and anchovy) biomass and demersal crustaceans (nylon shrimp and yellow and red shrimp) in coastal sectors and in inland waters, among others.
It is estimated that the design should last eleven months after the allocation, so construction could begin in 2019.
