An acknowledged expert on fisheries management will conduct an evaluation of the status of implementation and review of the regional plan of action for preventing, detering and eliminating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing adopted in 2009, by the Fishery Committee of the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) member countries.
The evaluation will be conducted by Samuel Quaatey, who was contracted by the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources
(AU-IBAR) for this purpose.
The Recommendation 9 of the FCWC 09th Conference of Ministers formally requested the African Union´s help to evaluate the implementation of the 2009 FCWC Regional Plan of Action for combating IUU Fishing, with the aim of updating it to be more realistic and in tune with current realities and best practices.
Quaatey´s visit to FCWC headquarters and his meeting with Seraphin Dedi, Secretary General of FCWC, are the first steps taken for the implementation of the AU support to the FCWC.
The next step of the consultation includes visits to Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria to contribute to the evaluation process and to agree to a new plan that can be fully implemented in the region.
