South Korea received a fishing quota of 7,385 tons for jack mackerel in the South Pacific, a 17 percent increase from last year, the fisheries ministry said Tuesday.
The quota was set at the sixth conference of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO) that met in Lima on Jan. 26-Feb. 3, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said.
The SPRFMO is in charge of preserving and managing non-tuna fish in the South Pacific and determines the fishing quota for jack mackerel every year. The organization allowed an increased quota for this year on conclusion that the fish resources have improved.
South Korea catches about 6,000 tons of the fish in the region annually for exports.
