Nine South African fisheries, including those focused on longline yellowfin tuna and commercially harvested West Coast rock lobster, have been selected by a special panel for pre-assessment against Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards for possible inclusion in sustainability improvement efforts.
The effort is part of a four-year project known as Fish for Good”, which is funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery and aims to accelerate the building of fisheries sustainability networks in Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa”, reads a statement from MSC. Following the pre-assessment, five of the fisheries will be picked for further support in the development and implementation of improvement action plans.
Other South African fisheries picked for the pre-assessment include those focused on: pole- and line-caught albacore tuna; purse seine-netted sardine; hand-caught east coast rock lobster; rope-grown black mussel; kelp; and jig caught squid. The west coast multi-species line fishery has also been picked for the review.
