The Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in its decisions XIII/23 (https://www.cbd..int/doc/decisions/cop-13/cop-13-dec-23-en.pdf) and 14/24 (https://www.cbd.int/doc/decisions/cop-14/cop-14-dec-24-en.pdf), requested the Executive Secretary to prepare a long-term strategic framework for capacity-building beyond 2020, ensuring its alignment with the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the capacity-building work of the Protocols.
The Executive Secretary was also requested to organize consultation workshops and online discussion forums to allow Parties to the Convention and its Protocols as well as indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) and relevant organizations, including women’s and youth organizations, to contribute to the preparation of the long-term strategic framework.
The Acting Executive Secretary, CBD, writes:
Pursuant to the above decisions, I am pleased to invite you to take part in the Online Discussion Forum on the Preparation of the Long-Term Strategic Framework for Capacity Development to Support Implementation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, scheduled to take place from 25 May to 1 June 2020. The Forum will provide an opportunity for participants to share additional ideas and inputs on the draft elements of the strategic framework and discuss any other issues that were not addressed during the Thematic Consultation on Capacity-Building and Technical and Scientific Cooperation, held from 1 to 2 March 2020 in Rome, Italy.
Participation in the Forum is open to Parties, other Governments, IPLCs, women and youth organizations actively involved in relevant capacity-building efforts. To join the Forum, participants must register and sign-in on the Forum web platform (https://www.cbd.int/cb/discussion-forum/) using their CBD account. Those without a CBD account can create one by following the instructions on the CBD sign-in page. Kindly note that those who were registered for the Thematic Consultation held in Rome have already been pre-registered to participate in the Forum and will be receiving a follow-up message soon.
Parties, other Governments, IPLCs, women and youth organizations unable to participate in the Forum, but wishing to provide comments on the draft elements of the long-term strategic framework, may send their input to capacity.building@cbd.int, as soon as possible but no later than 5 June 2020. The draft elements of the framework and the form for submission of comments are available on the capacity building webpage (https://www.cbd.int/cb/strategic-framework/).
