The deep depression over south-west Bay of Bengal which has now intensified into a cyclonic storm and is named Cyclone Burevi is very likely to cross Sri Lanka on Wednesday night, the Meteorology Department said. The storm lay about 330 km east-southeast of Trincomalee last night is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro, close to Trincomalee around today (02 December) evening/night, the Met Department forecast this morning said. Cyclone Burevi with a wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting up to 95 kmph is very likely to move nearly westwards thereafter, emerge into Gulf of Mannar. Due to this situation the rainy and windy condition is expected to enhance considerably over the island. Intermittent showers and thundershowers will occur in the Eastern, Northern, Northern-central, North-western, Central, and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Very heavy rainfall above 200mm can be expected at some places. Very strong gusty winds (80-90) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western, Western, Central, and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep and shallow-sea areas over the island until further notice. The sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee can be very rough or high at times. The other sea areas can be rough or very rough at times. There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves of 2.0-3.0 m height.
