Fish farmers need to make necessary preparations for fish lakes as there may be floods in August, said Win Kyaing, General Secretary of Myanmar Fishery Federation (MFF). As the water levels of Chindwin and Ayeyawady Rivers in the upper Myanmar are rising, these flood water may flow towards the lower Myanmar. If there are heavy downpours, Ayeyawady, Yangon and west Bago may face floods in August and September. The floods will occur in August. Fish farmers should level up the banks of fish lakes and sell out adult fishes. The floods may lead to the suspension of fish farming sector and hamper fish production. This year, fishes get good prices as fish production is dropping. Fish prices may go up due to the flooding. Fish farmers need to make necessary preparations for it in order to minimize the losses. In 2015, the floods affected 34,720 acres of fish farms16,641 acres in Ayeyawady, 10,118 acres in Yangon, 7476 acres in west Bago, 456.749 acres in Sagaing and 25 acres in Magway. In addition, the floods hit 58,689 acres of fish and prawn lakes in Rakhine, resulting in a loss of about Ks 50 billion.
