Against the backdrop of the ongoing fishing ban on the west coast of India and the State government strictly enforcing the FDA guidelines on import of fish; fresh fish has remained elusive to the common man in Canacona. The otherwise hustle and bustle in the main fish market of Canacona at Chaudi, which starts at 9.00 in the morning, has been missing since the beginning of June with a few customers descending in the market, some of whom buy whatever fish available while others go empty handed. The situation faced at other satellite fish markets at Charrasta, Sheller, Shristal, Poinginim, Mashem is the same. Since Canacona has 42 kms of coastline, which is the longest amongst all the talukas in Goa, fishing is a traditional activity, and hundreds of fishermen cast their nets in the sea and in the rivers during monsoon. This catch is essential during fishing ban for mechanized vessels as the common people in Canacona are able to get their daily quota of seafood on their plate. However, these days, getting a good catch has been difficult. The worst affected are the fish sellers as they toil the entire day waiting for the customers to buy their fish and sometimes the unsold fish has to be disposed of as there is no cold storage facility in Canacona complained a fish vendor on the condition of anonymity. However the die-hard fish eaters from Canacona proclaim that they can’t survive without seafood, not even on a Monday; they end up purchasing fish even when the cost is on the higher side while others who are small on budget settle for smaller portions of mix fish that’s called karmat’ locally.
