In a statement here, Mr Anbazhagan said that the Union government had already banned the use of Purse Seine Nets and several states including Tamil Nadu implemented it. Monday urged the government to impose a ban on the use of Purse Seine Nets (Surukku Valai) for fishing in the Union Territory. However, the government here as usual paid no heed to the union government order and the fishermen are using it and its other varieties with much investment. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu officials seized such nets from Puducherry fishermen while fishing in their area. Since, the use of the net is leading to law and order problems also, the Puducherry government should impose a ban on it forthwith, and adequate compensation be provided to the fishermen who invested in it, he demanded. When fishermen met Minister for Fisheries Malladi Krishna Rao today, he informed them that the Tamil Nadu government had imposed the ban on the use of Purse Seine Nets and because of this, they seized the nets from Puducherry fishermen. On their request the government got in touch with the Tamil Nadu government and sought the release of the nets. However, they refused citing the ban order. The Minister further told them that for the time being the ban may not be implemented in Puducherry. If it was imposed in all states, Puducherry will also have to follow the suit, he said. However, Mr Rao assured the fishermen that he will raise up the issue in the meeting to be held in New Delhi on June 25. Meanwhile, he included 1411 new beneficiaries to the fishermen pension scheme today. Their monthly old age pension would be remitted to their bank account, the Minister added.
