The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation maintaining its reputation as a high quality fish distributor has decided to implement a new program to supply quality fish to consumers. The decision was taken recently at a meeting held between the State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi and Ceylon Fisheries Corporation Chairman, Managing Director and all other Heads of Departments. At the discussion, it was decided to widely change the Fisheries Corporation’s system of procuring fish and instead buy the fish stocks directly from the fisher folk on the shore without the involvement of a middleman. During the discussion, it was emphasized that by the new method, a huge amount of commissions paid to the middleman can be saved and quality fish can be provided to the consumers at low prices. It was revealed that at some occasions the middlemen’s commission amounts to Rs. 30-40 per kilo of fish. It was decided to pass the savings of the commissions from purchasing the fish directly from the fishermen to the people. A decision was taken to deploy officers for supervision to ensure that the program is carried out properly with transparency. Instead of auditing after making payments, it was decided to carry out an audit according to the government’s monetary policy to ensure that the relevant functions are properly carried out before making payments. The measure aims to control the possible irregularities.
