State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi has said that steps have been taken to develop Kalametiya Fishery Harbor in Hambantota district as the first Smart Fishery Harbor in Sri Lanka. The State Minister revealed this while participating in an inspection tour of the Kalametiya fishing harbor with a Korean delegation. The Smart Fishery Harbor concept is to be launched under the Blue Economy Program. The delegation engaged in a special study on the acquisition of water from the bottom of the sea to fully meet the needs of the fisheries harbor. The Korean delegates who participated in the event said that not only the water requirements of the fisheries harbor, but also the drinking water for the surrounding villages could be provided from over 150 feet under the sea bed while protecting the environment. State Minister of Wedaarachchi stated that this could be a sustainable solution to the acute drinking water shortage in Kalametiya area. During the observation visit, the delegation also looked into the possibility of generating solar power to supply electricity to the harbor. The delegation stressed that under the Smart Fishery Harbor concept, it is possible to generate sufficient power to meet the needs of the Kalametiya fishery harbor and even contribute the excess electricity to the national grid.
