Housing minister Jayesh Salgaonkar and deputy speaker Michael Lobo, accompanied by about 25 traditional fishermen, met fisheries minister Vinod Palyekar to discuss about issues related to illegal fishing practices at the secretariat in Porvorim on Thursday. Such unhealthy fishing practices must not be carried out because they, not only affect the existing fish population, but also destroy the later generations. We, therefore, have to impose strict rules to ensure that illegal LED fishing and bull trawling are discontinued, Palyekar said. In November 2017, the central government ordered a ban on fishing with the use of LED lights from zero to 200 nautical miles across India following a demand made by Goa government. The order to start inspections of fishing vessels for use or installation of the fishing gears such as LED lights, fish light attractors or any other light equipment with or without generator landed/berthed on the jetties was issued in December 2017, as a result. Soon after, the state directorate of fisheries started implementing the order by way of stringent inspections carried out daily to track potential violations. However, their powers were limited within the jurisdiction of 12 nautical miles of Goa.
