Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department on Monday warned the Naval and fishing communities about the rough sea conditions, although the depression over the southeast Arabian Sea area was moving away from the country. The Meteorology Department warned the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant, since the possibility of the roughness in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Matara is still high, with the increase of wind speed up to 70-80 km ph, particularly during the thunder showers. The Meteorology Department said the depression over the southeast Arabian Sea is located 1650 km away from Colombo near Latitude 11.9 degree North and Longitude 65.8 degree East and the possibility for very heavy showers/thundershowers and very rough seas, very high winds can be expected in the sea areas, within 100-200 km of its location. The depression in the Arabian Sea is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and into a Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It is likely to move northwestwards away from Sri Lanka, the Meteorology Department said. The Department requested the fishermen on boats fishing in the Arabian Sea areas, to refrain from naval and fishing activities in this areas. The warning is in effect till 2200 hrs on Monday, it added. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Northern, Western and Eastern provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts in the morning too. Heavy falls about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Eastern, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Western provinces, said the Met department.
