Coastal Karnataka Fishermen Action Committee, a confederation of 63 fishermen organisations of coastal Karnataka, has decided to meet all MPs from coastal Karnataka to discuss about diesel price hike. Committee general secretary Vasudev Bolooru said that the increase in diesel price in the recent months has affected fishing community in large scale. He said price of diesel has increased by Rs 16.50 in the last one year. Mechanised fishing not only provides employment to lakhs of fishermen and others directly and indirectly, but also caters nutritious food for people in large quantity. The nation gets a major share in export revenue through fishing industry. Since majority of the fishing boats use diesel, the entire industry has been affected very badly. The situation is such that the mechanized fishing may be stopped completely at any time if the trend continues, Boloor said. A preliminary meeting of the action committee was already held in Murdeshwar. Later, fishermen from the coastal districts also took part in the meet held in Goa on Wednesday. The meet witnessed participation of fishermen from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Daman and Karnataka, Boloor said adding that the meet held in Goa has resolved to stay united, he said. In the meantime, Boloor said, We have decided to meet MPs from coastal Karnataka and discuss about our problems with them in the days to come. Similarly, a meet of all coastal MPs also has been planned in Delhi. Fishermen delegation also will make efforts to meet the Prime Minister, Union Finance Minister and Agriculture Minister through the MPs. We will urge the central government to reduce all taxes levied on diesel and supply the same at lesser price for fishermen, he said.
