Krishna district has secured top position in shrimp and fisheries production across the state. Kaikaluru, Gudivada and Kolleru region of the district, which play a major role in aqua exports, are now using advanced techniques with minimal usage of antibiotics and chemical drugs. However, the ban imposed by northeastern states alleging traces of formalin in fish is not showing any impact as most of the exports from the district are live fish. The state government which focuses on improving fisheries and other aqua products in the district had emphasized on educating farmers who are facing problems with the increased cost of production and poor produce. Farmers in Krishna district succeeded in producing 8,64,389 tonnes of produce which includes fish, shrimps, crabs among others. Export market of shrimp faced severe obstacles as European companies stopped importing them due to traces of antibiotics. Fisheries department, which appointed a special task force in this regard, worked round the clock to help farmers and production got boosted to 11,10,635 tonnes in current year with 28% growth. We used to spend lakhs on chemicals-based medicines to overcome loose shell and mortality problem in shrimps and unauthorised laboratories looted us referring expensive antibiotics. The market for our produce noted a sudden fall last year and the government took stringent measures to overcome this. We are really happy that support of district administration helped us in increasing production without using medicines and antibiotics, said Saagi Venkata Narayana Raju, an aqua farmer from Kalidhindi.
