Cultivation of fish in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) has brought revolutionary change in the CHT economy as the farmers applied Creek method in fishing between two hills. The Creek method is applied through constructing barrages on the creeks running down the hills of the hilly districts. The Creek method brought positive change towards fate of marginal poor people of CHT. They developed their lifestyle through cultivating fish in the Chittagong Hill Tracts utilizing Creek made method, said Abdul Hannan Miah, Project Director of CHT Fisheries Development and Expansion Project (3rd phase) and fisheries officer of Rangamati district. The government has undertaken the long-term project at a cost of Tk. 68.5 crore to develop and expand fish cultivation utilizing the method in the CHT hills, said the Project Director. Meanwhile, 200 creeks have already been built in between two hills at 25 upazilas of three hill districts of CHT through implementing the project under supervision of the ministry of fisheries. Abdul Hannan Miah said that step is afoot to build more 100 creeks. The potentiality of Creek method fishing will lessen fish pressure on Kaptai Lake, generate Employment Avenue to marginal people, and mitigate their long-felt water scarcity and increasing national protein supply, he added. He further said that the Creek method fishing is designed in such a way that will obviously benefit CHT people to live dignified life if properly utilized. A package of pro-people opportunities has been waiting for them to boost up their socio-economic condition, he also said.
