Jajpur, a Sub-Division of erstwhile undivided Cuttack district was recognized as a separate district on 1st April 1993. Jajpur district is famous for its historical and mythological significance in Odisha. The district has been bestowed with perennial rivers (Baitarini, Brahmani & others) along with their branches and tributaries due to which fishery is a potential area of development in Jajpur district. Where freshwater fish production is related to tanks and rivers, the fishermen community of the district is ignored by district administration and politicians. Out of total population of the district, about (12-15) % population is fishery community (depends on fishing / fishing related professions). About hundreds of fishermen from 10 blocks named as: Jajpur, Sukinda, Danagadi, Korai, Rasulpur, Dharmasala, Badachana, Bari, Binjharpur & Dasarathpur joined the meeting at Maa-Tarini Temple of Panikoili. The meeting was presided by Mr. Krushna Chandra Swain, The General secretary of OMF. Mr. Milan Das (General Secretary Dakshin Bangla Matshyajibi Forum) was invited as guest of honour and Mr.Chittaranjan (Vice president OMF) & Mr. Kiran Kumar Behera (President Balasore District Committee, OMF) were the distinguished invitees, present in the meeting. Mr. Jagannath Majhi of Korai block, Mr.Suryamani Majhi & Mr. Maguni Jena of Jajpur block, Mr. Maheswar Dalai of Rasalpur block, Mr. Ghanashyam Tarei of Danagadi block, Mr. Akshya Ku. Pani of Sukinda block, Mr. Sukadev Babu of Dharmashala block, Mr. Narayan Dalai of Badachana block & Mr. Bidyadhara Malik of Bari block take part in a healthy discussion on the necessity to create an association for the socially ignored fishermen community of jajpur district. The distinguished guests delivered their valuable words to organize the community and to fight against injustice. Finally few points below were pointed out to protest on: 1.Identify the real fishermen with a clear definition, who are the real beneficiary of government policies. 2. Create primary Fishermen co-operative society in fisher folks of the district {Only 18nos of active cooperative societies are operating (sickly) in the district} 3. The water ponds, reserves and such like in land water bodies should be leased-out to the fishermen community and the fishermen cooperative societies/ self-help groups. 4. The major water of the rivers flowed in the district are supplied to the Industries (Tata, Visa, Jindal, Neelachal, Mesco, Maithan, Dinabandhu, Rohit and K.J. Ispat), should be stopped or conditioned to interest of the dependant (fishermen) community. 5. In many places the rivers water and basin of the district are worstly polluted with the industrial wastages and asses (ass-ponds), which are destroyed the fish habitation and ultimately affected to the fishermen community of the district, should be stopped.
