Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) will hold a public hearing over the proposed development of fishing jetty, passenger jetty, multipurpose general cargo berths and petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) terminals at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on Sunday on April 25, at 10.30am at Tilak Maidan Vasco.Initially, the public hearing was slated for April 20 at Ravindra Bhavan in Baina.South Goa collector and District Magistrate Anjali Sehrawat has issued a letter to the pollution control board communicating the change in the date for the public hearing to assess the environmental impact of the proposed development and expansion of MPT.MPT chairman I Jeyakumar had earlier said that the POL berth along with a fishing jetty and passenger launch jetty was a part of the port’s expansion project and would help improve the financial health of not just the port but also of Vasco.MPT used to handle liquid cargo at berth Nos 8 and 10. As per MPT’s traffic projections, liquid cargo is set to see a growth of more than 2 million tonnes by 2029-30 and is poised to improve to the level of 3.6 million tonnes by the end of 2040-41.MPT had submitted a proposal to GSPCB along with environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports in early October 2017, but the board reportedly kept the file pending for three months. As per rules, GSPCB has to send the project proposal and the EIA to the collector within seven days and notify a public hearing.Sehrawat has convened an urgent meeting on March 28 at Mathany Saldanha of the departments concerned to ensure that the public hearing is conducted peacefully and successfully.
