Fishermen associations from Mormugao taluka have expressed serious concerns stating that around 20 per cent coastline of Goa has already been affected by erosion and if additional unsustainable development continues then the state will have no coastline and tourism will take a big hit. Addressing a press conference in Vasco on Thursday, the fishermen associations including Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), Old Cross Fishing Canoe Owners Co-operative Society, Baina Ramponkar and Fishing Canoe Owners, Desterro Fishermen Association raised an alarm over unsustainable development taking place in Goa. “Colvale area in North Goa and river Talpona in South Goa are already affected and every monsoon massive erosion takes place all over 105-kilometre long coastline of the state. If additional unsustainable development continues then very soon Goa will have no more coastline, thereby affecting the tourism industry, stated the fishermen associations. The fishermen have also raised concern over destruction of sand beaches and villages due to unplanned expansion of port with dredging. They have demanded that the state government should withdraw expansion plans of Mormugao port, denotify 6 rivers at the earliest, failing which, they said, they will be compelled to launch an agitation.
